Maple Practical Exercises for Teachers

First Work Sheet

As you can not access the Moodle work space yet, you find the first work sheet below.

Organizatorial Information

In these exercises, we work with the computer algebra system Maple. In theory, you can use computers equipped with Maple in room 003 in Pontdriesch 14–16 and in room 242 in the university main building. When the restrictions on meeting in person in the university are lifted, you will be able to use them during any of the dates of this course and the Practical Exercises II. You can find additional information about these computers on https://elearning.igpm.rwth-aachen.de/mathepool.

On the dates mentioned below, assistants will be present in person or online and answer questions about the work sheets and the Maple software. Please make use of this.

Online Communication

As we can not offer the course in person at the start of the semester, the communication will take place online during that time. The tests will be held via video conferencing. RWTH has decided to use the software Zoom for these purposes. You will also be able to talk to the assistants via this software. Please add me (krings@art.rwth-aachen.de) as a Zoom contact, I will then assign you to the right channel. If you have questions or need help or a hint, log in to Zoom during the question times and ask in the channel for assistance. Include the topic, e.g. "I need help with exercise 5.3 about bilinear forms." You will then be invited to a video meeting, where one of the assistants will help you.

Registration

You have to register via RWTHonline for this course and will be assigned a group. During the time of your group, the tests of your understanding will take place (see below). It is recommend to make use of the question times in order to do the exercises and ask questions.

Tests

Starting in the second week, there will be a test each week. You will be asked questions on the topic of the current work sheet. You have to have completed the exercises until this test. In order to pass, you have to pass all the tests. However, you can repeat up to three non-passed tests on a separate date during the lecture-free period. If you fail four tests or fail a test during your second try, you do not pass the course.

Setup of an account

In order to access the computers, you will need an account. I will setup the accounts in time before the start of the exercises. After that, you have to choose a password via this website.

Remote access

In the first weeks of the semester, presence in the computer room will not be possible. To use Maple anyway, you can access the RWTH servers from home and use Maple there. The servers of the CIP-Pool are available for this purpose.
They can be accessed via an SSH connection X11. This can be done, for example, via the programs MobaXterm or x2go.

For MobaXterm, download and install the program. Then click at 'Session' at the upper left and choose SSH. As 'Remote Host' enter mars.mathepool.rwth-aachen.de or venus.mathepool.rwth-aachen.de and confirm with 'OK'.

Then start the session by a double click and enter your user name and password. Attention: The password will not be shown, this is normal.
After the login, enter xmaple and a new popup with the program will open.

If you already have an X server running on your computer, which is common for GNU/Linux systems, you can connect by entering 'ssh -CX 000000@mars.mathepool.rwth-aachen.de' in a terminal, replacing 000000 by your immatriculation number. You can connect to the other server, venus.mathepool.rwth-aachen.de, analogously. As with MobaXterm, the next step is entering 'xmale' to start Maple.
